Pushing for Turnout in Texas Primary

April 4, 2012 4:26 pm by: Matt Largey

Texas’ primary election day is less than two months away and Secretary of State Hope Andrade has launched a voter education program aimed to increase turnout. Along with a very late primary date, voters have possible confusion over new district lines to contend with.

“We want to make sure that all our Texans start thinking about voting and hopefully will understand that it will be the day after Memorial Day,” Andrade said. “We do have early voting May 14 through the 25 and we’re hoping they’ll start thinking about maybe including this in their plan for Memorial Day.”

The state passed a law last year requiring most voters to show photo identification before casting their ballots, but it was blocked by the Justice Department last month and will not be enforced for next month’s primaries.
