In his new house overlooking Los Angeles, Joachim Cooder decided to write music that reflected the stunning view. “It was mainly just what I wanted to listen to as I looked out at the pink L.A. sky,” says Cooder, but he took these instrumental soundtracks and decided to send them to singers to see what they came up with. The result is Love On A Real Train, Cooder’s debut album, due out April 3rd.
Even if it’s his first solo output, Cooder has a long pedigree. He’s the son of famed guitarist and producer Ry Cooder, and he worked with his father on the platinum-selling self-titled hit by the Buena Vista Social Club. When he’s not scoring Southern California sunsets, Joachim Cooder also lends his talents to film soundtracks like Lars And The Real Girl and Dead Man Walking.
It’s this behind-the-scenes work that serves Cooder well on Love On A Real Train. Each of the songs are perfectly-realized musical worlds built largely through Cooder’s skill as a percussionist and band leader. Some of the vocal guests include Cooder’s wife Juliette Commagere and the Decemberists’ Petra Haden, and today’s song of the day features Matt Costa. “Strike Up Your Matches” revolves around a sampled Tahitian choir, and it takes both Costa and Cooder working together to give these soundtracks life.
