May city elections are almost here; early voting begins Monday. There are 14 candidates running for four seats on the Austin City Council. KUT News continues its candidate interviews this afternoon.

Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole is running for re-election in Place 6. KUT’s Wells Dunbar spoke with Cole about Austin’s African-American community, police, and steps to improving affordability.

We are quickly becoming what I consider two Austins, a very prosperous Austin and then another Austin that does not have as many opportunities, and you can’t just look at the police relationship with members of our vulnerable class, many of which but not all are African-American; you have to look at workforce development, you have to look at education, you have to look at what type of support systems from the church and the family are actually there. And only when you’ve taken a comprehensive look can you begin to make a dent in that problem.
