City elections are almost here. There are 14 candidates running for four seats on the Austin City Council.

Dominic “Dom” Chavez, senior director for external relations at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, is one of seven people running for the Place 5 seat. KUT’s Wells Dunbar spoke with Chavez about Austin Energy’s rates, alternatives to urban rail, affordability, and improving education.

The cities that are very progressive, that are very forward-looking, are not simply relying on their local school board to figure out education and make it a priority. I’m talking about bringing them all to the table and setting strategic goals.
