After their jaggedly quirky and somewhat directionally mystifying 2008 debut Does You Inspire You, it was time for Brooklyn-based duo Chairlift to draw some lines. Not to restrict themselves, mind you – it was more about defining. They continued to push the envelope further with their second full-length release, Something.

Happily, there remains the potency of some rather obscure ‘80s electronic pop influences in their music, but this time they emerge with several more striking elements to it; the pacing is a bit faster, the melodies a little bolder. It’s a rhythmic, vivid pop fest, with a cast of manic characters shedding their emotional turmoil with lunatic abandon. Twistedly elegant pop for more discerning ears.

This is one you won’t want to miss. Catch Chairlift at their show tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the outside stage. Ramona Gonzalez‘ LA-based pop-funk project Nite Jewel and NYC-based artist Olga Bell‘s band Bell will start out the evening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Then, make sure you stick around for the Chairlift afterparty inside, featuring Austin bands Love Inks, Les Rav, and Technicolor Hearts, starting after 10:30 p.m. All great music. Recommended.
