Business Group Sees Flaw in New Math Standards

April 18, 2012 12:00 pm by: Nathan Bernier

The Texas State Board of Education is in the process of adopting new math standards this week that would be used in classrooms for the next decade. But the proposal is under fire from one influential business group.

Bill Hammond with the Texas Association of Business says the math guidelines are not as strong as national standards already rejected by the state.

“There’s a lot of language in there that we think is barely comprehensible,” he says. “And, as often happens in the committee process, far too many items are mentioned and there’s not enough depth in the document in certain important areas.”

Hammond says he will urge the State Board of Education to revise the standards and consider delaying the vote for final adoption until June.
