For all their bluster and rock and roll swagger, many of the songs on Bobby Jealousy’s debut album are fairly sweet odes to love, and that’s certainly the case with today’s song of the day. “Never Let You Go” is a standout on a record that, in itself, is a standout in the local scene.
Bobby Jealousy is formed around a trio of songwriters, a fact that hints at the power behind A Little Death, the group’s debut. Sabrina Ellis is one of the dynamic singers in Austin’s A Giant Dog, and drummer/bassist Seth Gibbs runs Superpop Records, the recording studio that’s captured Bobby Jealousy as well as Leatherbag. Co-singer Mark Stoney came the furthest–the England-native stayed put in Austin after a memorable South By Southwest in 2007.
On A Little Death, the various influences of the band members come together and form a unique whole. There are bits of glam, blues, punk, and pop, all built around the charismatic give-and-take between all the musicians. But it’s the inherent sweetness of the songs that really set them apart. Ellis and Gibbs are married, and on songs like “Never Let You Go,” Bobby Jealousy aren’t afraid to come out and proclaim their love for one another. The group started out as a fun diversion among friends, and even as their profile rises, that togetherness remains.
