The AUSTIN PSYCH FEST is celebrating its fifth year of bringing together numerous psych-rock, garage, pop, experimental and drone music artists for one of the biggest celebrations of its kind. Founded by The Black Angels and The Reverberation Appreciation Society in 2008, the fest pays tribute to the original psych movement of the late ’60s while highlighting contemporary bands influenced by that musical heritage and the artwork that evolved from it.
More than 60 bands are playing this year’s fest, scheduled for this weekend – Friday through Sunday – at the newer Eastside locations of two of Austin’s music venues, Emo’s and the Beauty Bar Ballroom. But excitement over the fest is already brewing with some preview parties, including last night’s premiere showing of the AUSTIN PSYCH FEST concert documentary at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, highlighting last year’s mammoth event at the Seaholm Power Plant.
There are also a couple of preview shows to get you warmed up for all the great music, including a show tonight at The Mohawk, 912 Red River, on both the indoor and outdoor stages. Stellar line-up to blow your eardrums and your mind: Sleepy Sun, Saint James Society, and Hidden Ritual (outside); White Hills, Sun God, and La Migra (inside). Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the music starts at 7:30 p.m.
The next preview show is Thursday at Red Seven, 611 E. 7th St. The bill includes performances by Indian Jewelry, Christian Bland & the Revelators, The Wolf, Cerise, Slow Motion Rider, Chief Nowhere, and more. Doors open at 7 p.m.
These shows provide a nice introduction to the fest, if you haven’t attended yet. Very groovy music all around. Far out. Recommended.
