The South by Southwest Film Festival begins today, with over 130 films playing in nine venues. There will be plenty to choose from this year, so where do you start? KUT’s Terrence Henry spoke with Matthew Odam from the Austin American-Statesman and Kimberley Jones from the Austin Chronicle about what they’re looking forward to at this year’s festival, and the combination of research and serendipity that goes into picking films.

It’s kind of jumping down the rabbit hole; you look for directors’ names and writers’ names and actors’ names, see what they’ve done or been connected to or who they’ve collaborated with to try and piece together a missing piece, something that maybe hasn’t gotten a ton of buzz. I’ll watch trailers on YouTube, I read the synopses, if they’ve played at other festivals I’ll try and read what the buzz was coming out of those festivals. But the great thing about festivals is, almost every time my top movies are movies I wasn’t expecting to love, and then I stumble into a screening, because there’s always a movie playing.
