It was an astounding question presented to me recently that raised the eyebrows and made my jaw drop. Perhaps it wasn’t the question itself, but the fact that to this day, I still get asked this very question and it stops me dead in my tracks. I’ll hear this: “So, are there any good shows tonight?”

Insert stunned look here.

I get blown away by the query because not only are there good shows going on in our town practically every night, but the number of good shows each night is overwhelming. It boggles the mind to even think of keeping up with all of them. However, we’re lucky to have a multitude of outstanding online resources that can point you in the right direction. One such resource is Ultra8201, a blog that keeps its readers posted on the latest happenings in town, the majority of which are related to music – great shows, great bands, dance parties, videos, films, and music festival updates. My friend and colleague Richard Gonzalez is the music fan behind the scenes, and thanks to him, I’ve been introduced a number of up-and-coming bands to look out for.

Gonzalez has been keeping us updated on all the cool goings-on through his blog for six years. He’s celebrating with a special Ultra8201 6th Anniversary Party tonight at The Swan Dive, 651 Red River. Of course, talk about the perfect triple bill:  Matt Oliver‘s indie rock quartet TV Torso, dark indie pop rockers Politics, and indie-pop trio by way of Houston Young Girls. The always-fabulous ULOVEI will be at the turntables to spin between sets and most likely snap equally fabulous photos of you. Things get underway around 9:30 p.m. A hearty party indeed. Recommended.

And congratulations, Richard. Well done.
