If you want to get technical, the music portion of SXSW doesn’t officially start until tomorrow. But this is Austin. Lots of music to be had, too much so to wait until Tuesday. A lot of shows were popping up as early as last week. The weekend was filled with loads of stuff to check out, and there’s more in store for you today. It’s a bit overwhelming, but never fear! The Austin Music Minute is here to help ease your way into the week with a mix of recommendations for official South-By showcases and events off the beaten path.

Today’s recommended extravaganza comes from my esteemed colleagues at local music blog Covert Curiosity, live music performance video production artists Austin Music Weekly, and the crew of Ender Productions. Their showcase: Strange Brew, a fantastic variety of local and touring bands, many of which may have heard about on KUT, read about on Covert and seen in remarkable video recordings by AMW. The party gets started today at 2 p.m. and runs late into the night at one of East Austin’s hottest spots, Hotel Vegas, 1500 E. 6th St. The show is free with an RSVP at the event’s Do512 link.

They have a tasty line-up indeed:  One-man funk-soul band Henry & The Invisibles, psych band Holy Wave, dirty blues-inspired Spanish duo Guadalupe Lata with members of the sultry Carousel Cabaret, gritty rock/pop outfit Leatherbag, San Marcos ’50s and ’60s pop-rock quartet The Victory March, San Marcos indie folk-rockers Those Nights, indie rock band TV Torso, freewheelin’ folk-grass hoodlums Whiskey Shivers, Brooklyn-based dark pop artist Cerise, local garage rock quartet The Zoltars, dark folk/rock duo White Dress, and jazz/blues trio The Love Leighs. Plus, there’ll be a set by roots music band Sour Bridges outside, starting at 10 p.m. This is a guaranteed fabulous show, with lighting and sound expertise courtesy of Ender Productions.  Plenty for you to enjoy. Recommended.
