Lakes Get Little Benefit from Recent Rain

March 12, 2012 5:11 pm by: Matt Largey

Weekend rains didn’t have much effect on water levels in the Highland Lakes.

Lower Colorado River Authority meteorologist Bob Rose says lake levels were only up a little more than 2 inches.

While the Austin area did see a few inches of rain, Rose says it’s going to take a lot more than that to make a difference in lake levels.

“We need to see a rain event with about say 5 to 6 inches of rain, something in that neighborhood, where the rain is coming down pretty fast,” Rose said. “That way, the rain doesn’t have much time to soak in, and so then most of that will run off.”

Rose says rains later this week probably won’t amount to much more than a quarter of an inch, having a minimal effect on lake levels.
