Gold Beach is an atmospheric indie-pop band that’s flown a bit under the radar. But, like the rising tide, pretty soon they’ll be hard to ignore.

The group is headed by childhood friends Tony Daugherty and Michael Winningham. The duo grew up on the same street together in Houston, and started writing music together in high school before moving to Austin. In the early 00s Daugherty and Winningham formed the defunct, but still well-regarded, pop group The Glass Family. In January 2011 the two self-released Gold Beach’s debut record Habibti to warm reviews. They were aided in their musical journey by a band made up of members from other great Austin acts like Balmhorhea and Tacks, The Boy Disaster (just to name a few).

Gold Beach just released a self-titled 7″ single. On the A-side you can find today’s song of the day, the eponymous “Gold Beach,” with “The Soft Effect” on the B-side. The band has also devised an interesting distribution method: a purchase of the white vinyl 7″ single includes a download card for four additional Gold Beach tunes. It’s an innovative move for an innovative pop group.
