Delta Spirit: “Tear It Up”
On their first two records, Southern California’s Delta Spirit recorded everything live, with just the four members creating all the racket. Folk music lies at the heart of these old songs, and you can hear the group having a blast as they bash away at acoustic guitars and trash cans. But Delta Spirit’s self-titled third album is a reinvention of sorts, and they’ve come out the other side bigger and better.
Since the release of 2010′s History From Below, the group has added another member and treasure trove of new sounds. The folk influences are less pronounced; in their place are electronic elements that still manage to capture the beating rhythmic devotion at the heart of Delta Spirit. The new songs have already been road-tested, too. The group was a premier act at last year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival, and they hit South By Southwest hard: their fifth go-around reportedly involved sixteen shows over four days.
All the hard work and experimentation has paid off. Delta Spirit recently stopped by KUT’s Studio 1A to debut songs off the new album, and they sound even better in the live setting, even with the new bells and whistles. “Tear It Up” is today’s song of the day, and it’s an appropriate title for what Delta Spirit makes its living doing.
