Gov. Rick Perry once vowed to create a $100 million scholarship fund. How did it turn out?
KUT’s Emily Donahue spoke with Gardner Selby of the Austin American-Statesman and PolitiFact Texas about the latest entry in the Perry-o-meter, which compares the governor’s actions to his campaign promises, such as the $100 million fund for college scholarships in science-related fields, which came up empty until mid-July.
That’s when Perry announced a $25 million donation to fund scholarships in that program from the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corp. The Higher Education Coordinating Board is writing rules, so presumably, if things click, scholarships can be awarded by colleges maybe as soon as next school year.
