Songwriter Mike Doughty recently stopped by for a session in KUT’s Studio 1A where he performed three cuts from his latest studio record Yes And Also Yes, which was released back in August.

Doughty is probably best known as the former frontman and main songwriter for the 90s band Soul Coughing. The band broke up in 2000, and Doughty has spent more time as a solo artist than he did with that group. He recently wrote a memoir called The Book of Drugs about his time with Soul Coughing, his addiction, and his eventual recovery.

As both an author and songwriter, Doughty bares his life for all to see, and expands on this idea on his latest live record The Question Jar Show. Part intimate acoustic performance, and part one-man show, Doughty answered questions on-stage submitted to him by the audience. The questions could get a bit absurd (“Would you play Twister with Dick Cheney, or punch a kitten?”), but Doughty delivers the answers (“The Twister with Cheney”) with ineffable wit and charm.

It’s a charm Doughty had in his recent visit to KUT. The third song from his 1A performance, “Strike The Motion,” showcased Doughty’s signature lyrical gymnastics, and it’s today’s song of the day.
