Singer-songwriter Megan Reilly hails from that other great Tennessee music town, Memphis. Reilly’s music pulls from the melange of styles that make Memphis such a historic musical city. You can hear everything from slow-burn soul to a bit of alt-country, all reined in by Reilly’s outstanding voice.
Reilly first picked up a guitar in her teens. She performed in bars and clubs in Memphis before packing up and leaving for New York City at age 23. After arriving, she met Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who helped guide her through the NYC music scene. Reilly released her debut album Arc of Tessa in 2003 which she followed up with 2006′s Let Your Ghost Go.
Six years later, Reilly is set to release her third record The Well on April 24–and it’s well worth the wait. Reilly comes right out of the gate with the excellent “Sew The Threads Into Your Heart,” today’s song of the day. You can hear a bit of Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton in Reilly’s strong vocals. She belts out her lyrics over a hypnotic, and vaguely psychedelic, alt-country melody. The song is tied to Memphis’s past without being tied down by that very same musical history.
