Austin’s own Megafauna is a power trio that combines elements of atmospheric indie, big classic rock and monster riffage from guitarist and vocalist Dani Neff.
The group formed in February 2009 after Neff moved to Austin from Brooklyn. In November 2010 the group released their debut full-length record Larger Than Human. On the album, the band deftly balances muscular, driving rock and dreamy, shoe-gaze-y layers. It’s jarring, but instantly engrossing. Today’s song of the day “Wiretappers,” which appears on Larger Than Human, opens with blistering, hard-charging punk. Drummer Page nears the speed of light on the skins as Neff unleashes fury on the six-string. But about of a third of the way in, something changes. The song turns on a dime, drops tempo and becomes a delicious chunk of gut-bucket rock buoyed by Neff’s ethereal vocals and some bluesy licks she unfurls near the end. The song really moves, and has energy to spare.
Since the group’s inception, Megafauna has earned a reputation for blistering live shows. They’ve done some hard gigging in Austin and around the country, and on March 9 you can check out Megafauna live when they play Swan Dive.
