Tinkering is exploring. And it’s especially cool when, as a musician, you can tinker around with different sounds and figure out what works the best, and what fits where. That might’ve been the case with Matt the Electrician (a.k.a., Matt Sever) and a bevy of instruments that he may not have ordinarily had on hand, as he worked on his album Accidental Thief. Sure, he’s performed with several musicians in the studio and onstage, but we’re talking about actually playing each instrument himself.
Accidental Thief is Matt’s seventh studio album, really a milestone marking the ways he’s been inspired over the years. This time, he wanted to see what else he could bring to the table. So, aside from the guitars and banjo, he took on the glockenspiel, trumpet, assorted horns…a toy piano. But he humbly admits it was more about experimenting in the studio, rather than learning how to play each instrument well.
Don’t miss Matt the Electrician at his show Thursday night at The Saxon Pub, 1320 S. Lamar. His set begins at 8 p.m. If you haven’t had the chance to see him yet, do check him out. Recommended.
