The spirit of DIY music promotion is alive and well in our city. While some bands admittedly need a fire lit beneath them because of their apprehension toward self-promotion, quite a few artisans go out of their way to deliver their work to the audience, even if it’s simply CD sleeves designed by hand. I personally have several treasures like that (shout-outs to Bill Baird, Dana Falconberry, and Wild Bill, from whom I received probably the most intriguing packaging that included a somewhat disturbing piece from his Halloween costume). Of course, don’t forget the most important thing – the music inside.

Songwriter and Kinky Machine frontman Ethan Kennedy found time in his busy schedule to get his band’s EP, Drag, to me, and I was thrilled to find within its black-and-gold cover a little who’s-who list of local artists lending their support as guest vocalists, including photographer Stevan Alcala, musician Mahshad Vakili, songwriter Dan Dyer, and Houston-based music artist Colin Cuming.

Drag moves a myriad of rock and soul influences in a slightly more trippy direction, a realm that Kennedy describes as floating somewhere between “alternative juju” and “post-modern garage.” Call it what you will, but you need to check it out.

Looking forward to a full-length release from Kinky Machine at some point. Meanwhile, you should catch their show tonight at the Hole In the Wall, 2538 Guadalupe. The bill includes alt.-folk rockers Little Brave and songwriter Meggan Carney. Things get started after 9 p.m. Recommended.
