Corpus Christi is considering a ban on plastic shopping bags that would also charge consumers who continue to use them. Its city council discusses the issue at public hearing today but does not expect to vote yet.

Neal McQueen is proposing the ordinance with the support of the Surfrider Foundation’s local chapter. He says banning plastic bags will improve the quality of life along the Coastal Bend region.

“This impacts three things. There’s the marine life. It also impacts tourism because we have a very large tourism industry here on the beaches,” McQueen says. “It also impacts our city pride – our self-image as a city.”

As proposed, the ordinance includes a $1 fee for consumers who use plastic bags during their shopping trips. The money collected would go towards conservation efforts in Corpus Christi.

Cities in Texas that have implemented bag bans include Brownsville, Pecos and Fort Stockton. Austin’s bag ban is still pending.
