Austin High’s Best of the Best
Jeff MartinezRecently KUT was asked to help the Advanced Media Arts students at Austin High School get a feel for how to tell stories in a different way. Rebecca McInroy of Storyboard worked with the kids and their teacher Gil Garcia on a visual form of storytelling that incorporates some of the audio techniques we use in public radio. After Rebecca gave them some instruction we loaned them equipment for a project that was designed to profile Austin High teachers nominated as Teacher of the Year. Then Garcia turned them loose.
Garcia said, “I am really proud of the team for turning this around on such short notice and for putting in the hours to make it happen…The students jumped at the chance to make these, they were fighting each other over teachers, they were more excited to do these than their usual work. I think that’s a testament to these teachers. Even students that had never had those teachers in class before knew who they were and admired them, were curious about them, and wanted to know more about them…as teachers, as people. When students feel that way about our teachers–that’s an amazing thing.”
Take a minute and check out the “amazing thing” the Advanced Media Arts students at Austin High put together. We’re delighted to have been a very small part of this wonderful project.
