It’s that time of year – already. I, your Austin Music Minute maven Laurie Gallardo, am experiencing a strange mixture of excitement and exhaustion. South By Southwest looms on the horizon, and every Austinite knows, for better or worse, it becomes a time of sensory overload. Bands from near and far converge in our fair city to show festival-goers what they’ve got. A good portion of the anxiety comes from the preparation for the onslaught. It can be overwhelming.

But several locals know how to put a positive spin on the pre-fest jitters. Whitesiren, a promotional entity that coordinates events, manages bands, and shows quite a bit of support to up-and-coming artists, presents a special event that shines the spotlight on local talent, called A Local Night For Local People. This is the mini-showcase’s third year, and it’s gotten bigger: Twenty bands on two stages. Local Night takes place tonight and tomorrow night at two venues – Frank, at 4th and Colorado; and the Swan Dive, at 615 Red River.

What a fantastic set of line-ups…

Tonight:  Frank – An evening of electronic madness, featuring GOBI, Oh Look Out, BK & Mr. E, End Wave and Sleep Talk. The Swan Dive – A mix of instrumental performances and power pop, with Digital Antique, My Education, The Baker Family, Gentlemen Rogues, and Les RAV.

Tomorrow night:  Frank – Rock and pop on the dark side, with Oh No Oh My, STEREO IS A LIE, New Roman Times, Dead Black Hearts, and Western Ghost House. The Swan Dive – Phenomenal rock and roots music, with The Pons, The Strange Attractors, The Greatcoats, Pillow Talk, and Haun’s Mill.

Consider your weekend schedule filled. Here’s to lots of great local music. Recommended.
