What We’re Watching: The Esme Barrera Fan Club band

January 20, 2012 7:28 am by: Rebecca McInroy

The Esme Barrera Fan Club band was created in less than five days, and performed an original arrangement of “She’s A Rainbow” by the Rolling Stones at the Austin Memorial Service for Esme Barrera, on January 15, 2012, at Fiesta Gardens.  The 37-member band is composed entirely of volunteers from Girls Rock Austin, where Esme also volunteered.  Esme is near and dear to everyone in the girls rock camp community, both here in Austin and beyond.  She was a gifted instructor, a remarkable band coach, a boundless positivity spreader, and an all-around awesome promoter of the phrase “You rock!”

Members of the Esme Barrera Fan Club band here are all wearing a patch noting their membership in the club. The story behind the Esme Barrera Fan Club band name has its origins in Esme’s first summer volunteering in 2008.  Upon noting that a fellow volunteer was having a hard time, Esme rallied the rest of them—most importantly the graphically artistic ones into the creation of an official member patch—to form the Rachael Shannon Fan Club.  This is just one example among many of the infinitely incredible acts of kindness Esme performed throughout her life, and her unique ability to lift up those around her.
