South by Southwest will be here before you know it, and music venues are required to request music permits well in advance this year.
Applications for one-day sound permits now need to be submitted at least 21 days in advance; multi-day permit application need to be in 30 days in advance. The City Council approved the deadlines last month.
“Last year during South by, we were hit with requests for permits up until the day before,” said David Murray, the city’s sound engineering consultant. “It’s just not practical for us to be able to adequately assess the impact to the surrounding area and all the other needs, traffic, parking.”
Last year’s South by Southwest brought lots of complaints about huge crowds and traffic jams in some neighborhoods close to downtown.
The city also says it’ll be increasing code enforcement during this year’s festival.
