From down out of the Catskill Mountains by way of Brooklyn, NYC comes Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. Together the nine-piece neo-soul machine brings an up-town polish sound to the gritty sounds of southern-style soul.

At the center of the band is singer Arleigh Kincheloe (a.k.a Sister Sparrow). She formed the band along with her harmonica-toting brother Jackson and drummer cousin Bram Kincheloe. The Dirty Birds also features guitarist Sasha Brown, bassist Aidan Carroll and a muscular, four-part horn section. The young band can already claim an impressive CV. Their energetic live shows yielded months-long residences and wowed NYC audiences. Within half a year of the release of the band’s 2010 self-titled debut, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds had opening spots for The Black Keys, the Neville Brothers and Dr. John, just to name a few.

On February 28 Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds release their sophomore album Pound of Dirt, and today’s song of the day “Millie Mae” is its first single. Featuring a laid-back New Orleans rhythm, a Muscle Shoals melody and impressive vocal work from Sister Sparrow, it’s a mellow, good-times tune that’s equally at home at a down-home Sunday barbecue or a Saturday night dance party in Brooklyn.
