In Austin it’s easy to take for granted the amazing wealth of talented people that walk our streets daily, cook at our restaurants and food trailers, teach our children, and play in our clubs and bars almost 24/7. We may think they will always be here, you may think you will catch them next week, you may think you know them; yet as time goes by and people move on, it’s important to take the time to listen to the stories that shaped these incredible lives before it’s too late.

Black Red Black is a jazz group made up of three of these ordinary yet extraordinary people: Ephraim Owens, Red Young and Brannen Temple. They are busy most nights playing tunes around Austin, including regular gigs Tuesdays, as the Ephraim Owens Experience, at the Continental Gallery and Wednesdays at the Highball. When they get together they are expanding and exploring and working to move a genre forward. When listening to them one can imagine a scenario where if the club caught fire while they were in the middle of a set, as the smoke began to rise, it might be more important to stay in your seat just a little bit longer and listen, rather than run from the flames.

Listen to Black Red Black live in Studio 1A.

Also be sure to check out this video of Black Red Black playing at Lamberts Downtown Barbeque in Austin Texas in 2009.
