With a name like My Golden Calf, one could half-expect rock gods ready-made for idol worship. But you’d be dead wrong. In reality, the Austin foursome creates simple, nuanced rock ‘n’ pop that’s as listenable as it is intriguing.

Part of the intrigue comes from singer-slash-frontman Dabney Dwelle’s voice. It’s hard to deny that Dwelle has an unexpected voice. There’s a sweet innocence, and an Englishness in his voice that seems out of place for a Texas boy. The closest comparison is a less punky, folkier, young Wreckless Eric. But combined with the richly layered melodies he and the rest of the band create, it really works. The band can turn on a dime from bouncy keyboard-driven pop to angular, moody guitar rock and lilting folk. The latter is on full display on today’s song of the day “Powdered Wig” from My Golden Calf’s debut LP Rituals to Make New.

If you’d like to worship at the foot of My Golden Calf (and you really should), you can get your chance this Saturday at the Mohawk.
