If you’ve heard Celeste Griffin, or her musical moniker Monarchs, you know her as the feisty, Alabama-born singer-songwriter who specializes in her own refreshing brand of southern-fried, blue-eyed soul epitomized by 2011′s great Rise and Fall. That’s certainly true, but there’s another, maybe less-known side of Celeste Griffin: the hip-hop diva.
For her latest effort Ft. Celeste – A Monarchs Mixtape, Griffin takes funky, down-tempo instrumental DJ tracks and samples from producers like J. Dilla, Clams Casino and sings and, yes, raps over them with her own words. It’s a hip-shaking affair, and Griffin’s effortless, sometimes bawdy lyrics make the interesting case that maybe this is what she was meant to do.
Today’s song of the day “Make Some” is a perfect example. The music track comes from the song “Sumac Berries” by producer MF Doom. It’s a groovy, sexy track that gives Griffin a chance to unleash her inner diva. Unfortunately Austin’s lost Griffin to the northeast, but if she keeps putting out fun records like Ft. Celeste, we’ll be watching and listening for what’s to come.
