Spicewood Beach Goes Dry

A cluster of communities about 40 miles northwest of Austin has officially run out of water. The Lower Colorado River Authority began trucking in water yesterday. KUT’s Andy Uhler reports on what’s happening in Spicewood Beach.

Austin Teacher Salaries Decline

The Austin school district’s board of trustees voted last night to end a declaration of financial emergency. The declaration was made last year and it allowed the district to eliminate about 11-hundred positions. But now the school district is in better financial shape and Superintendent Maria Carstarphen is talking about a pay raise for teachers. And as KUT’s Nathan Bernier reports, that comes as a new study shows average teacher salaries declined over the past year in Central Texas.

Meningitis Vaccine Deadline

All new students at Texas colleges and universities must prove by today they are vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. If not, they can’t return to classes or even their on-campus dorm rooms. It’s part of a new law passed by the state legislature last year. KUT’s Ben Philpott reports on its implementation.
