Public Hearing on Proposed Electricity Rate Increases

A public hearing Thursday night is sure to draw a crowd of residential and business customers of Austin Energy. The city-owned utility announced proposed rate increases last month. As KUT’s Erika Aguilar reports on today’s Newspod, some customers fear the burden will be hardest on those already struggling to pay the bills.

Perry Going All Out Against Romney

Texas Governor Rick Perry needs a strong showing in the South Carolina primary to continue his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Money and support will dry up with another 5th place finish. For KUT News and the Texas Tribune, Ben Philpott examines the Perry campaign’s latest strategy: attacking the business practices of frontrunner Mitt Romney.

State Parks Get Financial Boost

The cash-strapped Texas parks system has been appealing to the public for financial help. The Associated Press reports the nonprofit Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation has donated $500,000 to state parks. Texas Parks and Wildlife recently said it was $4.6 million short because of the drought, record heat and a decline in visitors.
