This tiger prawn was caught near Little Lake in Larose, La. Photo courtesy Jim GossenHuge shrimp-like creatures that can grow over a foot long are showing up in nets all along the Gulf Coast. It might sound like a tasty surprise, but as KUT’s Mose Buchele reports for StateImpact Texas, it’s also a mystery at sea that could threaten the ecosystem of the entire Gulf of Mexico.
“We have some concerns that they’ll be active predators on our shrimp and crabs. … It won’t be nice for the ecology. Our fish are not designed to eat foot-long shrimp,” said one researcher.
