Frank Smith Vinyl Release Show Tonight at the Mohawk
It’s a wonderful feeling to get excited over new music that’s on the way. Austin band Frank Smith conjured that vibe with some tantalizing sneak previews from their forthcoming full-length album Before You Were Born with a special Fall Song series, releasing tracks individually per month last fall.
The album is a rather marked departure from the country, folk and rootsier qualities of their earlier work. It’s a very natural progression away from those influences toward a more rock-fueled sound. And while the distinctively dark undertone that Frank Smith is known for remains a defining presence, this new album is clearly a testament to the broad, multifaceted range of frontman Aaron Sinclair’s songwriting abilities.
In an interview last year, Sinclair half-jokingly admitted he’d been in a bit of a songwriting rut because things had been going pretty well for him – no emotional crises, a great life, great girlfriend. You can’t force the darkness, yo.
“When everything’s going really good, I don’t write a lot,” Sinclair says. “I guess I find inspiration in darker places, for lack of a better word. I’m not one to write happy songs – lyrically, I guess. Don’t get me wrong. I love listening to other people’s happy music. I like all sorts of stuff.”
This is the first time Frank Smith is releasing their music on vinyl, and they got United Pressing in Nashville to do the job. The albums are ready to go, and the band will have plenty of them available at their release show tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the inside stage. This is going to be a great party with two other Austin Music Minute favorites on the bill: Salesman and The Dalles. Doors open at 9 p.m. One heck of a triple bill. Highly recommended.
