KUT listeners will probably recognize Carrie Rodriguez from her time sharing the stage with songwriting legend Chip Taylor. The local Austinite has trained under the Suzuki method since the age of 5 but it wasn’t till her stint at the Berklee School of Music that she settled into the violin. Several duet albums with Chip Taylor, a few solo records, and a cover album later and Carrie continues to push her musical repertoire to new boundaries by joining forces with guitar virtuoso Bill Frisell. Trying to condense Bill Frisell’s career and musical style into a simple bio is impossible. The man has recorded so much different music with so many different people you could probably play the music version of “Six Degrees of Separation” pretty easily.
In the 80s Frisell was one of the premiere jazz guitarists on the New York scene, from there he transformed into one of the most sought after country and bluegrass guitarists in the country. Carrie Rodriguez seems to have found him somewhere in between the two for her latest collaboration. For today’s Song of the Day we have an example of just how vast their collective songbook is with a cover of The Kinks “Tired of Waiting for You.” Here is Carrie Rodriguez and Bill Frisell from KUT’s Studio 1a for our Song of the Day.
