I’ll begin this post by stating the obvious: Hot tubs can be very rock ‘n’ roll. You’ve heard all the legendary rock star stories – or maybe you have Eddie Murphy as a reference point. In one particular case, it marked the beginning of a band: Boy + Kite.
Songwriters Darvin Jones and Beth Puorro had been sneaking into a spa just outside of Austin, after hours. Of course, as with any musician, they were struck with inspiration in the oddest of places – the hot tub chats led to song ideas. Jones and Puorro soon recorded a three-song demo as a duo in November 2009. The following spring, they added bassist Giuseppe Ponti and drummer Chris Mietus, and the four began working on more tracks for their forthcoming full-length release, 2011′s Go Fly. This is a brilliant mix of indie/pop rock, ’80s electronica and various alt.-rock moments, along the lines of Sonic Youth and The Cure.
Check out Boy + Kite when they play Tuesday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River. This is a triple bill hit that includes Mazzy Star-esque dark popsters The Asteroid Shop, and indie rock quartet (including an American Sign Language interpreter, thank you very much) Anam Milá. Doors open at 8 p.m. Don’t miss it.
