Throughout the span of his 20-year musical career in Austin, Rey Arteaga has played with some of the best artists around, including Sarah Fox and Joel Guzman, Charanga Cakewalk, La Tríbu, Son Yuma, Centzontlé, and Melecumbé, to name a few. About eleven years ago, Arteaga had gathered with some fellow musicians after a late night party for some jams; together, they thought of donating their talent and time to a good cause. They chose local non-profit Anthropos Arts, which promotes music and music education in local area schools. (Full disclosure: I, your Austin Music Minute hostess, Laurie Gallardo, am a board member of this wonderful organization.) This is the band that became Son y No Son.
Son y No Son draws fans of Latin music to the dance floor with a unique, bold blends of Cuban son, Columbian cumbia and Mexican bolero and ranchera, classic styles presented in fresh and innovative ways. The music is timeless, passionate, invigorating, and something extraordinary for audiences new to Latin music to enjoy.
See for yourself when Son y No Son performs tonight at Frank, located at 4th and Colorado. Salsa/Latin jazz ensemble Tiburon starts the evening off. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. for the show. This one comes highly recommended.
