Nashville-based songwriter Rayland Baxter had a very busy summer, touring as the opening act for the duo The Civil Wars. It was the perfect opportunity to share new songs he’d been working on for his forthcoming full-length debut album, as well as his 2010 EP The Miscalculation of Song.
Music does the talking for Baxter. He might joke around between songs at his shows. But generally, he doesn’t have much to say about himself. He’ll list a handful of some his musical influences, like Buck Owens, Ray Price, Neil Young, Johnny Cash or Dylan. Yet the name-throwing thing isn’t what he’s about. Baxter prefers that people interpret his music in their own way. Take what you want from it – he appreciates the fact that music has different meanings for everyone.
Baxter returns to Austin and to the Cactus Cafe, 24th St. and Guadalupe in the Texas Union, for a show Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 8, so be sure to get there early for a good seat. Recommended.
