If you’re thinking you’ve heard me rave about this before, you’re absolutely right. Not In the Face! sears the ears with the kind of electricity that’s a mind-blower.

Here is a type of band that will capture your attention with its first song at a live performance. They launch right into the action and proceed at full-throttle with explosive, down ‘n’ dirty rock ‘n’ roll. To get really specific, it falls somewhere in the (Texas, mind you) redneck rock vein – fiery, unrestrained and spectacular, with the unleashed energies of songwriter and vocalist Jonathan Terrell and drummer Wes Cargal tearing up the place while they play.

I can’t help but share this story again. It’s one of my favorites: One night during a summer tour this year, the guys were preparing to open for, of all things, a heavy metal band. This would mean loads of ear-bleeding guitar and wall-to-wall amps that could most likely destroy a small city. Naturally, some of the boys in the metal band were slightly taken aback when they discovered that a mere duo was opening their show. Seriously? You’re joking, right? They assumed two dudes wouldn’t stack up to the rock factor.

Terrell and Cargal proved them dead wrong. After dealing out some serious face-melting rock, the metal band guys were picking their jaws up from the ground and eating their words. Sure, it’s not metal, but it’s loud, proud and damn good music. They’re an unstoppable force slinging the sort of blues-influenced grit and grime that sets off some major hillbilly headbangin’.

Not In the Face! will launch their West Coast tour with a show tonight at Antone’s, 213 W. 5th. It’s a nice little triple bill featuring The Vitamins and Faceless Werewolves. Doors open at 8 p.m. Highly recommended. And whatever you do, don’t leave the earplugs at home.
