I will humbly admit to you that I, your friendly neighborhood Austin Music Minute maven Laurie Gallardo, couldn’t two-step to save my life, but I do have this profound appreciation for old school country. Call me stubborn or old-fashioned, but tend to ditch the new stuff of the CMT variety (with a few exceptions, of course) to pay homage to the likes of Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Hank – the pioneers who paved the way.

So, it makes perfect sense to me that I’d be a fan of local quintet Mike & The Moonpies. While they, too, have a great reverence for classic country, they also know how to put their own spin it. From their EPs Lyin’ (2008) and my personal favorite Catalina (2009), to their full-length album The Real Country (2010), Mike and the boys specialize in roots music for those of us with a soft spot for old school country and western.

Don’t miss Mike & The Moonpies when they play tonight at the Hole In the Wall, 2538 Guadalupe. Songwriter Cass Brostad shares the bill. Check ‘em out – and tell ‘em the Music Minute Maven sent you. Cheers.
