Matt Sever is known round these parts as Matt the Electrician. That’s what he used to do for a living, wiring houses and looking a bit worse for the wear when he would play shows at night. But Matt, being the gracious and lovely person that he is, would apologize for his disheveled appearance. It didn’t take long for his audiences to give him his stage name. Matt the Electrician had arrived.

Accidental Thief is his seventh album, and on it you’ll find he’s still as imaginative and earnest as ever, with a deep love of traditional folk. The album was recorded here in Austin, but for the first time in his songwriting career, Sever tried his hand at co-writing songs.  He spent about a year working with the House of Songs project (a collaboration between Austin and Denmark), and created the title track to the new record, inspired by a songwriter friend who commented that he’d always wanted to write a song about a thief who lacks malicious motivation – someone who steals something by accident.

Matt the Electrician is playing Monday evenings throughout December at the Saxon Pub on S. Lamar. You can see him play tonight at 7 p.m. Lonelyland follows at 8:30 p.m., The Leavers at 11 p.m., and Jack Wilson at 12:30 a.m.
