They are seemingly contradictory terms, yet they all describe the soundscape of songwriter Jessie Frye. Innocence and old soul. Fiery, then cool. Reluctant and, all at once, beguiling.

Frye carries an intense passion and delivery in her voice that is well beyond her years. The 22-year-old musician, based in Denton, TX, formed her first band in 2009 after receiving an invitation to play at South By Southwest, and that same year, she opened for Pat Benatar at the House of Blues in Dallas.

Frye’s latest EP, Fireworks Child, is a distinctive and eclectic mix of emotional opposites – mercurial and impetuous, yet intimate and constantly drawing you in.

Jessie Frye is in Austin for a show tomorrow night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River. The bill includes performances by Little Brave and Joanna Barbera. Doors open at 9 p.m.
