The Black Angels were playing in Brussels when they met psych-rock trio Wall of Death for the first time. Both bands knew that this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Vocalist and guitarist Gabriel Matringe, drummer and percussionist Adam Ghoubali and keyboardist and synth-bassist Brice Borredon have been playing together for a little more than a year now. Based in Paris, the band made its way to the States in mid-April after landing the opportunity to play the Austin Psych Fest, Austin’s own psychedelic music festival curated by The Reverberation Appreciation Society. They also made a connection with Black Angels’ touring engineer, Brett Orrison, owner and producer of Out of the WoodWork Studio. Wall of Death recorded a self-titled EP while they were in town at Orrison’s studio, with some help from Black Angels’ Christian Bland.
Wall of Death returned to Austin recently to work with Orrison on their forthcoming full-length album. Both the EP and the album will be distributed through Reverberation. They sat down with KUT’s Laurie Gallardo for an interview about their love of psych and working on new music.
Wall of Death plays this Sunday night at Hotel Vegas, 1500 E. 6th St., as part of the first installment of the Psychedelic Sundays series. Bland and Alex Maas will also perform.
