Boise, Idaho-native Trevor Powers is an anxious kid. At 22, he’s a long-time sufferer of debilitating panic attacks and chronic anxiety. He’s also a creative kid. Powers crafts delicate, dreamy pop songs under the name of Youth Lagoon.

During breaks from studies at Boise State University Powers retreated to his bedroom to assemble songs for Youth Lagoon’s debut album The Year of Hibernation, released on Sept. 27. It’s a bedroom record to be sure, but it’s also filled with lush, atmospheric tracks like “Cannons,” today’s song of the day.

“Cannons” is an expressive song. Powers juxtaposes cheery guitar and electric keyboard lines with cold electronic beats. His nervous falsetto has a fragile melancholy to it. It shows that whatever Powers’ demons may be, he’s using it to his advantage.

This month Powers embarks on his first national headlining tour. You can see Youth Lagoon tonight at Emo’s.
