Euday Bowman was born in Fort Worth on November 9, 1987. Although not as famous as fellow Texan Scott Joplin, Bowman also played an important roll in the development of ragtime and early jazz. Bowman was an accomplished player who wrote many songs. But his best known composition,”12th Street Rag” became one of the most frequently recorded tunes ever written.
More than 120 versions of “12th Street Rag” have been recorded by such prominent artists as Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Bennie Moten, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Next time on This Week in Texas Music History, we’ll remember a musician who built cars and painted houses when he wasn’t performing with some of the biggest names in jazz.
