The White White Lights “Doctor Doctor”
Austin’s own The White White Lights are the like the mutant love child of The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s arty, urban cool and Nancy Sinatra’s psyched-up strut. The much bandied-about group made a big splash last year with their considerable stage presence and an impressive debut EP Medium Head Boy.
The White White Lights are singer Jenny Gacy, guitarist and producer Jonas Wilson, drummer Davy Hamrick (also of the band Stereo Is a Lie), and bassist Matt Roth. Despite big time local buzz after the release of their debut, the band took a break in the summer of 2010. Since then, the band was featured in Austin rock-doc Echotone. This September, Gacy and Wilson lost their home and studio in the Bastrop wildfires. Soldiering on, The White White Lights are at work on a new record.
Today’s song of the day, “Doctor Doctor,” comes off Medium Head Boy. It’s a far-out tune. Cool fuzzy slide guitar from Wilson keeps the band’s feet firmly planted in the loam of rock and roll. But paranoid keys and Gacy’s slightly detached vocals interact nicely and together create an almost ominous tone, like touring through the fun house in an abandoned amusement park.
