Psychedelia roots outfit The Ripe first got together in 2007, and after a few line-up changes, the band was whittled down to a tight trio, featuring guitarist Jake Garcia, bassist Gian Ortiz, and one of the best drummers in town, Nick Yaklin.
While they clearly have a great admiration for their favorite bands from years’ past – think Big Star, The Nerves, The Troggs, The Kinks – they’re continuously inspired by their contemporaries in the rock and indie veins, embracing the best of both worlds. They churn out hooks and melodies that reflect late-60s psych and power pop influences, some folk, maybe even a little early garage rock. But the bottom line is, it’s great rock ‘n’ roll.
The Ripe toured through Italy and Spain this summer, the latter of which they spent extra time in to work on their debut full-length album, Into Your Ears. The band’s ready to celebrate its official album release with a show Sunday night at Club DeVille, 900 Red River. The show will feature a number of special guests, and performances by The Preservation and The Blue Dots. Doors open early at 6 p.m. Recommended.
