It’s funny how these things happen.
Courtney Hans and Earl Vallery met in a bar awhile back in New Orleans. Eventually, they were to fall in love and get married. But Hans always makes note of the fact that initially, she looked at Vallery and pretty much went, “Um…no.”
Of course, at the time, they also never would’ve guessed they’d be in a band together. Last year, they formed their husband-and-wife duo The Long Tangles. They knighted their music as indie-pop/matrimony-rock, and recorded their first EP, the three-track Blueprints and Maps. That was followed by their first full-length, Silver City, in January, and now they’re releasing their second album, Finer Things.
This is a collection of lovely, solid tracks driven by synths, piano, big drums and assorted finery, including glockenspiel and acoustic guitar. The vocals are a big part of what makes The Long Tangles stick out. The new album is made lush with added sparkle from Hans’ melodic, crystalline harmonies.
Don’t miss out on The Long Tangles’ CD release show Thursday night at the Swan Dive, 615 Red River near E. 7th St. The show includes performances by local bands Hello Caller, Elaine Greer & Friends, and Girl Dreams. Really, the entire show promises to be one big delightful pop dream. Check it all out. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
