Songwriter and Wimberley, Texas native Sahara Smith got an early start playing music. At the ripe old age of 12, she was already playing coffee house gigs. Then she got word of a talent competition presented by A Prairie Home Companion. No surprise that the talented young musician placed second, and before long she was making a huge impression nationally.

There have been a few shaky moments in her career, including a label that fell apart, and not to mention college taking up more than a bit of time, but music remained Smith’s priority. Now in her early 20’s, Smith paints romantic portraits in soft, hushed tones with the tracks from her album Myth of the Heart (2010). It’s as if she gives voice to secrets blowing in the wind, untold stories revealed in smoky tones with folk touched by the blues and a bit of country.

Be sure not to miss Sahara Smith perform Tuesday night at the Cactus Cafe, located at 24th St. and Guadalupe on the UT campus, in the Texas Union building. Doors open at 8 p.m. Recommended.
