You would need a spreadsheet and a slide rule to unravel the tangled web of bands and performers that make up the roots of the collective that is My Jersusalem. Members hail from groups like Great Northern, The Polyphonic Spree and The Twilight Singers, to name a few. The common denominator is songwriter and frontman Jeff Klein. He’s performed with all the members of My Jerusalem at one time or another and on his own as a critically-acclaimed solo act.
My Jerusalem’s debut LP Gone For Good is full of moody yet spacious tracks like today’s song of the day “Sleepwalking.” Released last year, the band made the record in New Orleans, but have since moved headquarters from the Crescent City to the Violet Crown.
“Sleepwalking” is anchored by a head-bobbing bass line, lush choral arrangements and a languid, but toe-tapping beat. Klein duets with himself, and adds both a loungy croon and a tortured wail to the mix. In true collective fashion, on Nov. 10 the band released a record of 10 remixes and covers of “Sleepwalking” by artists like What Made Milwaukee Famous, Dana Falconberry and more.
You can see My Jerusalem tonight at The Mohawk.
