Gaby Moreno is originally from Guatamala City, Guatamala, but some distinctly American music is what inspired her to become a songwriter and record her own songs.
When she was a little girl, she was mesmerized by an African-American woman singing in the street in New York City. It struck a chord deep within. When she asked the woman what kind of music she was singing, she also discovered something would make a major impact upon her creative life: The blues. Moreno was absolutely smitten.
It didn’t take her long to learn about blues artists, and she also began combing through lots of vintage jazz from the ‘20s, ’30s and ‘40s. These are all the influences that come shining through on her album Illustrated Songs, along with pop and Latin rhythms, R&B and soul, especially in her vocals, done in both Spanish and English.
You can see Moreno perform tonight at Lambert’s, 401 W. 2nd St. Opening the show is local songwriter Erin Ivey. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. This is a great double bill. Recommended.
